Fire Prevention Products –
Do They Really Prevent Fires?
“Fire prevention products” is a fairly misleading term.
Prevention suggests that you can stop a fire from happening, which
in truth is not really the case. For sure, you can take all the
necessary steps, including:
• Devising a fire safety plan
• Installing smoke alarms
• Installing fire proof doors, windows and floors
• Strategically placing fire extinguishers around the property
• Practising a fire drill once a month
• The list goes on…
But do any of these things actually prevent fire or just protect
against fire? Fire prevention equipment doesn’t actually stop
a fire starting, what it does is give you a tool to tackle a fire
with. But again, this is problematic in that if a fire breaks out
you should really vacate the premises immediately. People die every
year from tackling fires that are too big to be approached and get
out of hand very quickly. Making that split decision of whether
a fire is too big to handle or not is difficult and unadvisable.
Yet every day people rush back inside to grab belongings or try
to save their property – some get lucky others don’t.
Fire Prevention Systems
There is only really one fire prevention system that is worth the
money and that is a fire sprinkler system. Agreed, a fire sprinkler
system like the fire prevention products listed above, won’t
stop a fire breaking out – nothing in the world can do that
– but it will prevent loss of life and limit property damage
to a minimum. Fire sprinkler systems tackle fire so you don’t
have to risk getting third degree burns or suffering brain damage
or permanent lung damage from smoke inhalation. If a fire breaks
out then you get out and let the sprinklers handle the rest. No
grabbing for a fire blanket or extinguisher and no need to shut
fire doors behind you as you leave. The sprinklers will put out
the fire efficiently, and more often than not, well before the fire
service arrives.
The Truth About Fire Sprinklers
So why don’t more people have sprinklers as fire prevention
equipment? Simply because people don’t realise how effective
sprinklers are and how cost-effective they have become for residential
premises. The word “system” makes people assume expensive,
when in fact prices are now very reasonable for the level of protection
a sprinkler system can provide. Secondly, people worry about water
damage. Yet again, they don’t realise that a fire will do
far worse damage to your property and so will the hoses of the fire
service when they arrive.
Fire prevention products are a good start, but to really limit the
outbreak of fire you require a fire sprinkler system in your home.
